All the fun you can have on two wheels…

Perfectly placed midway between the Yorkshire Dales and cosmopolitan Leeds, Otley is a cyclists’ dream destination. With rolling hills, farmers’ fields and dense woods, the countryside around Otley offers some of the best cycling routes in the country, which is why when an international cycling event comes to Yorkshire, it inevitably passes through or around our historic market town.

Those surrounding hills have helped carve some of Team GB’s stunning cycling successes over the years. Former World Road Race champion Lizzie Deignan was born and learned to cycle here, while triathlete stars Alistair and Jonny Brownlee are from just up the road in Bramhope and can still be seen regularly training in the area.

You don’t have to be an Olympic medallist to enjoy cycling in Otley of course. Routes can be gentle and serene for those starting out, or full of lung-busting climbs such as the Côte de Chevin and Côte de Old Pool Bank for the keener cyclist.

“Otley is the cycling capital of the UK”

– ITV4 Tour de Yorkshire commentary 2018

It’s not just about road cycling either. Otley Chevin has long been one of the most popular mountain biking spots in Leeds. Bikes are allowed on the eastern Danefield side of the ridge where there’s a collection of bridleways with mountain bikers in mind.

The town of Otley is the perfect place to stay for cyclists from out of town, whether you’re here for one of the big events such as the Tour de Yorkshire, Otley Cycle Races or the UCI World Championships, or simply visiting some friends on another weekend and fancy getting out on two wheels.

We have cycle-friendly tearooms and cafés, one of the best pub scenes in Yorkshire, great restaurants and an amazing cycling shop, as well as cosy B&Bs, campsites, rooms above pubs and other accommodation options.
