Bonfires, beers and the Christmas countdown – what’s on in Otley this November

November in Otley is one of those months that just feels like a turning point — the last golden leaves falling, the smell of woodsmoke in the air, and the first twinkle of Christmas lights on the horizon. It’s a time for hearty nights out, local gatherings, and a few well-earned tipples before the festive rush begins.

Here’s what’s happening in and around Otley this month — from fires and folk tunes to festivals and festive fun.

Folk Tunes and Friendly Faces

Thursday, November 6 (and every Thursday)
The Horse & Farrier’s Open Mic Night is the perfect place to warm up your week. Hosted by Otley brewer and music lover Paul Briscoe, it’s an evening of easy-going live music, good company, and a pint or two in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re performing or just listening, it’s a great way to connect with Otley’s vibrant local music scene.

Light Up the Night – Bonfires in Otley and Pool

Saturday, November 8
Get your woolly hats ready — there are two big, family-friendly bonfires lighting up the night. The Otley Sailing Club hosts one for members and guests, while over in Pool, the Pool AFC Bonfire brings together the community for an evening of fireworks, food and fundraising. It’s all the fun of Bonfire Night without the chaos of city crowds.

Science, Fun and Fiery Minds

Sunday, November 9 – Saturday, November 15
The Otley Science Festival is back with a bang (in the safest possible way). Running for a full week, the festival mixes hands-on shows for families, evening talks for curious adults, and a packed Science Fair to wrap things up. Expect experiments, discoveries and the odd controlled explosion — plus art exhibitions and schools’ events that prove science can be every bit as creative as it is clever.

A Night of Spirit and Intuition

Tuesday, November 11 – The Rookery
Step into the mystical with Cheryl Todd, a natural-born sensitive who’s been offering psychic and mediumship readings for eight years. Her Evening of Spirit and Intuition promises an atmospheric night of connection and insight — ideal for anyone curious about what lies beyond. The show begins at 7.30pm.

Tapas, Tunes and the Sherry of Jerez

Wednesday, November 12 – Tapas & Tunes
For something a little more down to earth (but no less soulful), head to Tapas & Tunes for their latest collaboration with Chez Vin. Wine expert David Lawson leads an indulgent Sherry Pairing Adventure, matching five premium sherries from Jerez with five hand-crafted tapas dishes. At £50 a head, it’s an evening of flavour, learning and laughter — a true taste of Spain in the heart of Otley.

Art, Music and a Legend in the Room

Sunday, November 16 – UpCo
Music legend and visual artist Jon Langford (The Mekons, The Three Johns, The Waco Brothers) comes to UpCo for an unforgettable night of storytelling, song and art. Expect wit, wisdom, and a touch of punk-folk swagger from one of Leeds’ most iconic musical exports.

Cool Kings at the Whitakers

Saturday, November 22 – The Whitakers Arms
The Cooler Kings bring classic vibes to The Whitakers Arms with a free gig that spans the 60s, 70s and beyond. From soulful singalongs to irresistible dance tunes, it’s the perfect Saturday-night soundtrack — no tickets, no fuss, just good music and a great pub atmosphere.

The Big Switch-On

Monday, November 24 – Market Place
The festive countdown officially begins with the Otley Christmas Lights Switch-On. Events kick off at 5.30pm with live entertainment leading up to the big switch at 7pm — followed by fireworks to light up the night sky. You’ll also get the first listen to this year’s Visit Otley Christmas song.

Pints for a Purpose

Friday, November 28 & Saturday, November 29 – Otley Rugby Club
Raise a glass (or several) at the Otley Beer Festival 2025, returning to the Rugby Club for another weekend of good cheer. Expect more than 40 real ales, craft kegs, ciders, perries, gin, prosecco, food and live music. Even better, it’s all in aid of The Jordan Legacy, Homeless Hampers, and Wildlife Friendly Otley — proof that doing good can taste great.

Markets, Makers and Christmas Magic

Sunday, November 30 – Market Place & Otley Courthouse
Round off the month with two of Otley’s favourites: the Farmers’ Market (9am–1pm) and the Craft Fair (10am–1pm). Stock up on fresh produce, baked goods, cheese and chutneys at the market, then wander over to the Courthouse for handmade gifts, art, jewellery and festive treats. Perfect for ticking off the Christmas list — or just treating yourself.
