Heritage Open Day

September 14, 2019 @ 9:24 pm – 10:24 pm
Otley Courthouse
Courthouse Street LS21 3AN

This year’s national theme for Heritage Open Days is ‘People Power’. Otley Courthouse is a unique community initiative and an outstanding example of ‘People Power’. An exhibition of some of the people currently involved, the ‘Courthouse Crew’, was created by ‘Humans of Leeds’ for the Courthouse 15th Birthday in May 2019. Come and see the exhibition and take part in a guided tour of Otley Courthouse. Tours are available throughout the day, with fascinating details of Courthouse history and the building’s links with ‘Heartbeat’.
Back by popular demand are the ‘Beat Walks’, created by volunteers in 2018. Find out what it was like to walk a day and a night town beat in Otley between the years 1956 to 1968. Using memories from the oral history project, walk round some of the beat and find out how local police worked before and after the introduction of radios. Tours last one hour and the distance is 1 ½ miles. There will be 2 tours at 11am and 2pm.
“Beat Walks” group size is limited to 15 per tour. Booking from 12th August is essential.
