Welcome to Black Sheep Otley Folk Festival 2018

The 27th Otley Black Sheep Folk Festival is on track to deliver another great weekend from September 21-23 with concerts, dances, workshops sessions and street entertainment on offer, there will be something for everybody

Our campsite will remain at the field opposite Stephen Smiths Garden Centre, a short stroll into town and will be open from Friday afternoon until Monday morning.

 Tickets are on sale now and an adult full weekend ticket is £66.

This years artists include… Ashley Hutchings and his band: “The Origins of Fairport Convention”, Steve Tilston and Granny’s Attic, plus a host of loyal and local artists and more big names to be added.

First Otley Open Town Crier competition

Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! Town criers from across the country with something to shout about will descend on Otley on Sunday, September 23 to take part in the First Otley Open Town Crier competition.

Award-winning town crier and 2017 national champion, Otley Bellman Terry Ford will welcome criers from Newport to Nuneaton and Skegness to Sleaford to take part in the competition.

The event will see 11 town criers in their finest regalia plus their consorts parading from the town council offices at Otley Core on Orchard Gate to the town’s historic Market Place for the start of the competition at 11.30am.

Competing under Loyal Company of Town Criers rules, contestants will be required to offer their ‘home cry’ in the morning, followed by an afternoon ‘subject cry’ on the 300th anniversary of Thomas Chippendale, the world-renowned cabinetmaker who was born in Otley in the summer of 1718.

Competitors will vie for a series of prizes including Overall Winner, Runners Up, Best Dressed Town Crier, Best Dressed Consort and Best Ambassador. Each crier attending will also be presented with an Otley goody bag filled with local souvenirs and memorabilia.

Proceedings will close with an awards presentation and the chance for members of the public to have a go at ‘crying’ themselves.

Otley’s 11th Science Festival will feature a host of different events for all ages.

Festival sponsored by Otley Town Partnership, Otley Carnival, Institute of Physics, Royal Society Of Chemistry, Keele University and Otley Town Council

Otley Science Festival includes a number of events for schools. These are designed for primary schools (home educators also welcome). They run during the day of the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the Science Festival week in November: 6th, 7th and 8th. All shows run for 1 hour. Places are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment.
Cost £3 per child plus a free staff place for every 10 children.

Minibeasts: a microscopic safari with Marty Jopson
Tue 6th Nov 9.30am, 11.00am and 1.30pm
Take a journey from everyday life down into the realm of microscopic wonders with Marty Jopson, the BBC One Show’s resident scientist. The adventure will take you to a world totally invisible to the unaided eye. Marty begins with hugely magnified insects, but soon moves to plants too small to see and even bacteria, all demonstrated live on the stage. A show full of interactive demonstrations and samples harvested from the audience. You have been warned! A show supported by Zeiss, global leaders in the manufacture of microscopes.

The Real Science of Fireworks with Matthew Tosh
£3 per child. Years 3–6, KS2.
Wednesday 7th Nov 9.30am, 11.00am and 1.30pm
Internationally-recognised pyrotechnician Matthew Tosh introduces you to his explosive world of pyrotechnic science, revealing how firework displays create colours, sound effects and perfectly timed bursts. Matthew will bring his fascination of how things work as he demonstrates how science, technology and engineering ensure that displays are spectacular, accurate and safe for the public. The sights, sounds and smells of fireworks are all brought to life just a few metres from the audience in an experience guaranteed to thrill.

Surprising Science with Matt Pritchard
£3 per child. Years 3-6, KS2.
Thursday 8th Nov 9.30am, 11.00am and 1.30pm
In a show packed with science tricks, stunts and puzzles, Matt Pritchard challenges the audience to discover the sneaky scientific secrets behind surprising illusions. This is not just an awe and wonder show but one that encourages scientific enquiry and critical thinking skills. Along the way the audience will be taught a host of science tricks using everyday household objects that they can go away and try later; extending the learning and providing teachers with lots of follow up opportunities. During the show Matt will share his background and love of science.
£3 per child. Years 1–6, KS1 & KS2.
