Otley Town Partnership host Food and Drink Festival: Over 7,500 people enjoyed a great day out in the centre of Otley on 17th July. Crowds took advantage of the glorious weather to sample the delicious fare on offer by Otley’s Farmers’ Market stallholders and an array of Street Food vendors.
The event also featured a cookery theatre, hosted by the local chef Stephanie Moon, at which four demonstrations by local businesses showcased their talents to an appreciative audience. There was also a range of musical entertainment, and many children took advantage of the free face painting and bun decoration.
Bilonito Somboon, the owner of Little Somboon Kitchen said “just wanted to let you know what a great event you organised in Otley on Sunday. We had a wonderful day”.
Otley launches the ‘Welcome Way’ – The Walkers are Welcome communities of Otley, Burley in Wharfedale, Baildon and Bingley have recently launched the ‘Welcome Way’.
The route passes through stunning moorland landscapes, alongside rivers and reservoirs, across farmland, through woodland and local communities, affording the walker to experience an area of outstanding natural beauty. It includes three sections, all with excellent public transport links – Otley to Ben Rhydding, Ben Rhydding to Baildon and Baildon to Otley.
An attractive and easy to follow Guidebook has been published providing full details of the route, together with maps and descriptions. It can be purchased in Otley from Chevin Trek, Just Books, Mounseys, Stephen H. Smiths and the CORE, or can be ordered online at www.welcomeway.org.uk.

Otley’s popular Gallows Hill Nature Area has had a makeover. New footpaths, wheelchair and pushchair access across the site. The car park has also been resurfaced along with the installation of new gates, benches and fencing across the site. It is hoped that the upgrade of the footpaths will make access easier for visitors and that it will encourage more people to dwell on site to see the wide variety of amphibian, bird, mammal and insect species found on the site. Victorian Fayre – a proud success for Otley. The 30th anniversary of the Fayre on 6th December saw the biggest ever recorded attendance of around 19,000 people, and was rated as one of the best ever for the people of Otley and its visitors. Run by the Otley Town Partnership there was a wide variety of stalls, food concessions, music, and amusements for kids. There was also a variety of awards for best victorian type window displays in shops and pubs. We look forward to another great success next year on 4th December. Thanks to all that attended and gave their support.
Otley’s proud reputation as a cycling hub has been awarded the start of Stage 2 of the 2016 Tour de Yorkshire. Otley will host both the men and womens event on 30th April that begins in Otley and ends in Doncaster. Stage one on the 29th begins in Beverley and finishes in Settle, and the final stage on 1st May starts in Middlesbrough and completes the Tour in Scarborough.
Otley Carnival Awarded Skipton Building Society Grassroots Giving. Otley Carnival Committee would like to thank everyone who voted for them to become a Skipton Building Society Grassroots Giving beneficiary in 2015. They were one of the 70 groups selected from a shortlist of 1,000. This award will help to support the Carnival’s 2016 beneficiaries which are Yorkshire Cancer Research, Behind Closed Doors and Wheatfields Hospice. Skipton Building Society launched its award-winning Grassroots Giving programme in 2013 to help celebrate its 160th anniversary.

World Champion Lizzie! Otley’s own Lizzie Armitstead has added Road Cycling World Champion to her titles of Commonwealth and National Road Race Champion and Silver Medal Olympian. She won the title in the USA. The town is planning a celebration to mark the occasion so watch this space

Otley has been ranked as one of UK’s top 30 places to live in the UK. Our market town took 27th place in the Times newspaper’s Bricks and Mortar supplement in March.
